General Owner Information

The majority of Dalmatian owners (63%) surveyed own one or two dogs. As illustrated in Figure 1.

Figure 1 - Number of Dogs Currently Owned

38% of Dalmatians currently owned are between 2 - 5 years of age and another 35% are 6 - 10 years of age. No dogs currently owned were over 15 years of age.

Figure 2 - Age of Dogs Currently Owned

The overwhelming reason for owning a Dalmatian according to survey respondents is to have a companion/pet at 90% of all responses.

Figure 3 - Primary Reason for Owning a Dalmatian?

Nearly half of all survey respondents belong to the National Dalmatian Breed Club and 36% belong to their local /regional Breed Club.

Figure 4 - What Memberships Do You Belong To?

Survey respondents were asked to list the five most critical diseases or health-related conditions they felt should be studied for Dalmatians. The top five were:

  1. deafness/hearing
  2. epilepsy/seizures
  3. allergies
  4. urinary tract problems
  5. skin problems.

However, when survey respondents were asked to list the actual diseases or health-related issues their dog(s) have/had the top five list is as follows:

  1. allergies
  2. missing teeth
  3. arthritis
  4. chronic ear infections
  5. bladder stones.

Figure 6 illustrates the differences between owners perceptions of the most critical health-related conditions and the actual number of dogs with those conditions.

NOTE: as survey respondents were not choosing from a set list of disease or health-related issue but were using their own words to describe health issues – analysis of the data was confusing and left a lot of room for interpretation by the statistician and survey committee.

Table 5 - Diseases and Health-related Conditions Respondents Felt Are Most Critical to be Studied for Dalmatians

Note 1: Only diseases and health-related conditions with 3 or more responses are listed in Table 5.
Note2: respondents were permitted to enter multiple responses.

The most striking difference between what owners felt were the most critical diseases and health-related conditions and the actual number of dogs in the survey with those conditions are: deafness/hearing where 168 owners felt this health condition was an issue for Dalmatian yet 21 of the 513 dogs for which up to seven disease codes were recorded actually were deaf or had hearing problems.

This difference can partly be explained by one of the survey limitations reported on page seven of this report.

Figure 6 – Diseases and Health-related Conditions of Owners Responses Compared with Actual Number of Dogs with Those Conditions

The majority of the 255 survey respondents (89%) resided in the United States but it is interesting to note that 7% of respondents were from overseas, including Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand.

The average number of dogs per survey respondent was 3.2 dogs for a total of 809 dogs.
